0.10 - Bringing boulders to life


I've slowly been replacing my ugly placeholder art in Feedwater - this week it was the boulders' turn. Previously, they looked like this:

When the player pushed them around, the sprite would remain static. Now they look like this:

I found some excellent noise textures from OpenGameArt that I could use to scroll over the boulder sprite to create the illusion of a 3D sphere rolling around. This is the texture I used:

Besides the visual upgrade, I've also made some quality-of-life improvements for players on low-end devices:

  • Animations and lighting optimised to improve performance and readability in the more intensive areas of the final level
  • Made some of the louder sound effects, including the Geiger counter, less deafening for headphone users
  • Made it harder to fail the left room in the final level
